A Technique for the Quantitative Assessment of the Solution Quality on Particular Finite Elements in COMSOL Multiphysics

چکیده
To validate the reasonableness of a numerical solution to a partial differential equation on a given mesh, a common approach is to refine the mesh, compute a solution on the finer mesh, and compare the solutions on the two meshes. Comparing graphical representations of the two solutions gives a qualitative assessment of the solution quality. In many cases though, a priori error estimates from the theory of the finite element method are available that provide quantitative predictions of the expected solution quality in terms of the mesh spacing. This note shows how to use tools available in COMSOL Multiphysics to compute numerical estimates that can confirm if the finite element method performs as predicted by the theory. The technique presented does not assume that the true solution of the PDE is known. It is applied to linear Lagrange elements here, and extensions and limitations of the technique are discussed.

Numerical Demonstration of Finite Element Convergence for Lagrange Elements in COMSOL Multiphysics
The convergence order of finite elements is related to the polynomial order of the basis functions used on each element, with higher order polynomials yielding better convergence orders. However, two issues can prevent this convergence order from being achieved: the lack of regularity of the PDE solution and the poor approximation of curved boundaries by polygonal meshes. We show studies for La...

متن کاملEffective Modeling and Simulation of Engineering Problems with COMSOL Multiphysics
Mastery of finite element theory is necessary to write finite element program, but it is not necessary to use COMSOL Multiphysics package. It is only necessary to understand the physical problem at hand, how to use the finite element program, and how to interpret the results. This paper gives an introduction to modeling in COMSOL Multiphysics, as being employed in the course heat transfer, by d...
متن کامل2D inversion of gravity data in bedrock identification (case study: a part of Qotrum plain in Yazd province)
Introduction The gravity method measures the vertical component of the acceleration at the Earth’s surface. The earth’s gravity field is affected by the density of different rocks and structures. Therefore, this method can be used in mineral exploration or studying the subsurface cavities and structures such as bedrocks, channels, and dikes. Inverse modeling is useful in understanding the p...
